Built on relationships,
not marketing

After building an extensive reputation for offering the highest quality of individual academic mentoring in the Tampa Bay area, my private practice is exclusively based on client referrals and word of mouth.

For me, right and wrong answers are secondary to understanding the thought processes, feelings, and behaviors that lead to them. This approach has consistently helped students not just improve their performance, but become more thoughtful, self-aware learners.

Comprehensive academic support

Subject Tutoring

All levels of mathematics, sciences, English, and history. From pre-algebra through calculus, chemistry through physics, writing through literature.

Test Preparation

SAT, ACT, PSAT, AP exams, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, SSAT, PERT. A methodical approach that illuminates test-specific expectations.

Academic Mentoring

Study skills development, motivation and confidence building, college application support, and long-term academic planning.

Learning to learn

Learning to ride a bike parallels learning how to learn or take a standardized test—both require experiential learning. Just as there's no comprehensive manual for riding a bike because balance, steering, and pedaling are learned through experience itself, academic skills often develop best with someone offering guidance and support during the learning process.

Deepening Academic Awareness

Helping each student develop a clearer understanding of academic expectations and how different subjects and tests actually function.

Building Self-Awareness

Guiding students toward greater awareness of their own thinking processes, emotional responses, and behaviors.

Empowering Growth

Supporting students in developing better self-control and openness to new approaches that align with academic success.

How it began

In my first year of college, what was planned as a ten-minute presentation on pre-Socratic philosophers extended well beyond class hours as I continued fielding questions from classmates and the professor. The experience felt like a calling and led me to pursue a humanities and history degree.

Just before graduation, I rediscovered my love for math and science, eventually earning a degree in chemical engineering. I supported myself through tutoring during those extra years of college, and by graduation, I already had a full and thriving practice.

A Dual Background

This dual background in both humanities and STEM fields has proven invaluable in my teaching approach. The analytical thinking required for engineering combined with the critical reasoning skills developed through humanities study allows me to connect with students across a wide range of subjects and learning styles.

What Distinguishes My Service

Over more than two decades of practice, I've developed what may distinguish my service from others: a high level of empathy and insight for the way people think and behave when facing intellectual tasks. The careful observation of thought processes, actions, insights, and assumptions of my students has been my focal point throughout my career.

For me, right and wrong answers are secondary to understanding the thought processes, feelings, and behaviors that lead to them. When a student chooses an answer—whether correct or incorrect—my first reaction is not to respond or praise, but to understand what went into making that choice and how that thinking process can be reinforced or developed.

Teaching Philosophy

My approach to student-centered teaching is founded on three core principles:

Deepening Academic Awareness

Helping each student develop a clearer understanding of academic expectations and how different subjects and tests actually function.

Building Self-Awareness

Guiding students toward greater awareness of their own thinking processes, emotional responses, and behaviors when approaching intellectual challenges.

Empowering Growth

Supporting students in developing better self-control and openness to new approaches that align with academic success.

My teaching emphasizes building mutual trust and creating a supportive environment where students feel secure enough to make the paradigm shifts necessary for intellectual growth.

Outside of Work

When not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Sarah, and our children, Maggie, Olive, George, and Finn. I also enjoy listening to music and visiting museums and gardens.

What happens during the first session?

The first session is highly individualized and depends entirely on the student's needs and background. I consider everything from their academic starting point to their feelings and thought processes.

I often begin by modeling approaches and concepts myself, which puts less pressure on the student and allows me to demonstrate my teaching methods. My goal is to gauge my teaching style to match their learning style while identifying strategies I can add to their academic toolkit.

How do you track and communicate student progress?

I take a collaborative, responsive approach to progress reporting. When parents inquire, I provide detailed, nuanced feedback that goes beyond simple metrics—painting an impressionistic picture that captures the subtleties of how a student is developing as a thinker and learner.

How often do you recommend sessions?

I typically see students once a week, which the vast majority of my clients choose. In the interest of full transparency, I've observed over 25 years that twice-weekly sessions often accelerate progress significantly. However, most families choose once-weekly sessions for perfectly valid reasons.

How long do students typically work with you?

The duration varies significantly. I've worked with some students for just a single session, while others I've supported from Duke TIP in middle school through college—relationships spanning many years. For SAT preparation, most students work with me for a few months to about a year.

Do you work with students who have learning differences?

Yes, I have extensive experience working with students who have ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, and other learning differences. This experience has been both professional and personal—my wife is a certified Orton-Gillingham reading specialist, and our son has dyslexia.

What are the cancellation policies?

Cancellations made more than 24 hours in advance incur no charge. For cancellations within 24 hours, there is a $50 fee if I can fill the slot, or the full session fee if not. No-show appointments are billed at the full rate.
